January 2021 Newsletter

We recorded more than 1,500 student contacts through virtual programs this fall semester and we have more than 110 requests for online lessons for spring 2021. Our upcoming teacher development workshop filled within the first day it was promoted to the public! Wow! We're gearing up to increase capacity, including building out new facilities. In December, we raised almost $30,000 towards our goal of $500,000 to fully fund Phase I of our Camp Cooper Extreme Makeover.  Colin Waite featured on NPR's Arizona Spotlight.

Cooper Intern Profile | Diana Hsieh

Diana Hsieh is a graduate student in Hydrology who is working with us through a NASA grant, and her focus is curriculum development and revision. She is specifically tackling our Ecosystem Explorers program, formerly for 3rd grade learners and recently refocused on 5th graders because of changes to the Arizona Science Standards. She started in August 2020.

Tucson Weekly Covers Cooper Expansion

Tucson Weekly reporter Joe Giddens covered the Camp Cooper Extreme Makeover for the Tucson Weekly this week. We are so grateful for their help in spreading the word about our effort to raise $500,000 towards new bathrooms, showers and a solar shaded classroom facility, all part of Phase I of a comprehensive Camp Cooper remodel we expect to complete over the next 5 years.  Our efforts to update our nearly 40 year old facilities link to our mission, and our drive to expand the number of students we are able to serve each year by making our facilities more capable, comfortable and accessible.

After nearly half a century with no significant upgrades to facilities, the Cooper Center for Environmental Learning is launching Phase 1 of a new facility master plan for Camp Cooper. Phase 1 includes ecologically designed bathroom and shower facilities that will model sustainability with composting toilets, solar power, rainwater harvesting and greywater systems for water conservation. Designs are currently being finalized with leading Southern Arizona architects, Swaim Associates, and Watershed Management Group, with groundbreaking scheduled for spring 2021.
