Cooper Intern Profile | Ess Page

Feb. 5, 2021

Ess Page is a graduate student in Environmental Education in the College of Education, under advisement by Dr. Alberto Arenas, chief editor of the Journal of Environmental Education.

Q. Your focus is program development and facilitation. Can you share the nature of your work with the Cooper Center?

Since my time at Cooper has been during the pandemic, my work has been mostly virtual. I have been working with other camp employees on virtual field trips. I helped develop the elementary programs "Our Neighborhood", and "Pollinator Party". In addition to helping develop these programs, I also attend these trips as an additional instructor.

Q. What in your background and experience led you to the Cooper Center?

My background is a little less than conventional, having worked a variety of jobs including Farmer, Ceramics Teacher, Primate Researcher,  and most recently a cheesemaker. What led me here though was my interest in Environmental Education. Having graduated with a bachelor's in Biology, but also seeking to learn more about education I found Dr. Alberto Arenas and asked if he would be interested in taking on another Graduate student. This past fall I started my Master's Degree in Environmental Education and the Internship at the Cooper center seemed to pair well with my own interests and goals.

Q.  What are you interested in doing professionally and how does your work at Cooper connect with your larger professional goals?

My plan is to finish a masters and doctorate degree here at the University of Arizona in Environmental Education, from there I hope to find a university appointment that will allow for both research and teaching in the field the cooper center is centered in.

Q. Can you bring to light one specific experience or memory from your work at Cooper?  Something funny, or meaningful, or a learning moment for you?

While no specific experience comes to mind, The best part about working at the cooper center has been the opportunity to work with such wonderful people who also have a love for this earth and a passion for expanding that love to kids.
