An Update On Virtual Programs
1500 Students Served Remotely So Far This Year
 
 
Virtual field trip programs for PreK - 8 students, and remote teacher professional development workshops have allowed Cooper to continue to support science learning across Arizona. Our virtual field trips include a combination of live Zoom sessions, recorded content, and support materials. We recorded more than 1,500 student contacts through virtual programs this fall semester.

Interest In Our Programs Is Outpacing Our Expectations

At this time we have more than 110 requests for online lessons for spring 2021, and our upcoming teacher development workshop filled within the first day it was promoted to the public!  Clearly, we are in a position to grow our staff to accommodate the increased demand - plans are in the works!  However, it should be noted that we are only accepting wait list reservations for virtual field trip programs for Spring 2021.

Help Us Raise $153,250 To Begin Construction
 
Wow! In December, we raised almost $30,000 towards our goal of $500,000 to fully fund Phase I of our Camp Cooper Extreme Makeover, including new bathrooms and shower facilities, as well as a solar-shaded classroom. Thank you to all who donated!

So far this year, the total raised has been...wait for it...only $100. 

With $275,500 raised so far, and more than $70,000 remaining to be matched, now is the PERFECT time to give to the Cooper Center.  Every dollar you give will be immediately doubled!

Invest In Lasting Change at Camp Cooper

This upgrade will enable Camp Cooper facilities to serve more students, while using substantially less water and electricity.  The addition of new shower facilities will allow for longer programs with more students, and a new revenue stream from facility rentals. Internships At The Cooper Center
Professional Training For Future Educators & Scientists
 
 
Cooper Center interns work with us to develop and enhance programs, curriculum, administration and more. Our interns work alongside our education staff to encourage hands-on learning and exploration of the Sonoran Desert for the students of southern Arizona. Training is provided in accordance with the Cooper Center’s Mission Statement and our desire to help students develop positive feelings for the natural world, and to learn to live more lightly on the earth.
2021 Intern Spotlight:
Diana Hsieh & Josh Gaines
Diana Hsieh is a graduate student in Hydrology who is working with us through a NASA grant, and her focus is curriculum development and revision.

"I am working with Cooper Center staff to revise their activity for 5th graders, the ecosystem explorer trail guide. I am also developing new material that will expose the students to NASA’s GRACE satellites."
Josh Gaines is an undergrad in the Literacy, Learning, and Leadership Program with a minor in Parks and Recreation.

"I can see myself working in camp/recreation administration, committed to attracting and creating a satisfying, inclusive experience for a diverse group of individuals...my work at the Cooper Center gives me another opportunity to contribute and expand my skills to make our world a better place to live."

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
 
The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning, an outreach program of the University of Arizona College of Education, sits on the traditional homelands of the Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui, who have stewarded this land from time immemorial. Aligning with Cooper Center’s and the University’s core value of a diverse and inclusive community, it is an institutional responsibility for us to recognize, represent, and acknowledge the ancestors, people, culture, and history our community resides on.
