Camp Cooper
& The Cooper Center
for Environmental Learning

Camp Cooper Begins Long Awaited Facilities Upgrade
Majority of Initial Funding In Place

After nearly half a century with no significant upgrades to facilities, the Cooper Center for Environmental Learning is launching Phase 1 of a new facility master plan for Camp Cooper. Phase 1 includes ecologically designed bathroom and shower facilities that will model sustainability with composting toilets, solar power, rainwater harvesting and greywater systems for water conservation. Designs are currently being finalized with leading Southern Arizona architects, Swaim Associates, and Watershed Management Group, with groundbreaking scheduled for spring 2021.

While bathrooms might seem an unlikely first step for improving the Camp Cooper property, prioritizing this project will have a far-reaching impact. Camp Cooper sees overnight groups as large as 60 students and 20 adults at a time, and until now we have managed this with 4 toilets, 2 urinals, and no showers. This upgrade will more than double our capacity while using less water and electricity, and showers will allow for longer programs and a new revenue stream from facility rentals.
Contributions Up To $100,000 Will Be Matched
The Cooper Center is raising $500,000 to pay for the project, with $225,000 of that amount already pledged by private donors. In addition, a local philanthropic couple have pledged to match up to $100,000 in additional donations, essentially making the ongoing fundraising goal for this portion of the master plan $175,000.

Contributions can be made by individuals and families, foundations, or businesses and corporations at give.uafoundation.org/cooper-center.

Visualize Camp Cooper Of The Future
Spring 2021 construction will mark the first major facility improvements at Camp Cooper since its original buildings were erected in the early 1970s. Eco-friendly bathrooms and showers comprise the first step in a $3 - $4M master plan. Future phases will include renovated sleeping cabins, new classroom and administrative spaces and a commercial kitchen with sustainable food service.
