Camp Cooper Online Is Happening!

On June 8th, 2020, Camp Cooper made the unprecedented step of taking our education to an online format, creating weekly curriculum for elementary students in Tucson based on Camp Cooper Activity Centers as well as Arizona state standards in science. 

Thanks to a talented and flexible education team, and the support of the College of Education, we have been able to create dozens of videos, along with worksheets, online games, and activities for students that help hundreds of students connect with their Sonoran Desert surroundings - the plants, animals, weather patterns and more.

We are seeking feedback from our participants to help us improve our online programs, and we are welcoming in new families to Camp Cooper Online all the time. Camp Cooper Online is a free 10-week educational series of weekly emails full of video lessons, activities and printable worksheets to do at home aimed at grades K - 5.
 
Cooper Gives Thanks To Paul Lindsey

Paul Lindsey Internships in Education are awarded to University of Arizona students who build leadership and management skills through real-world experiences in their funded work with community outreach programs at a variety of local agencies.

Cooper Center was honored to work this past year with Michelle Silvers, Doctoral Student in Disability & Psychoeducational Studies. Michelle worked with our team to draft our first statement on the establishment of inclusive practices for our programs and facilities, aimed at ensuring that the Cooper Center experience is accessible and effective for differently-abled learners, educators, volunteers, and guests.

Seeking Historical Cooper Photos

Calling teachers and Camp Cooper parent volunteers.  Do you have pictures of Camp Cooper? If so, we are interested in seeing them!  Cooper has been in operation since the 1960s, but most of our photos are from the last 20 years.  Please email your photos (with permission to share, if you are comfortable).
In the 1950's, TUSD administrator, Herbert Cooper (left), was assigned the job of purchasing new school sites for TUSD. The site that Camp Cooper sits on was ultimately not slated to become a school, and was developed as an outdoor learning center for Tucson students. In the 1980s and 1990s, students at Cooper (right) participated in workshops that taught basic principles of archaeology.

Summers are time when we tidy up and prepare for our educational programs in the fall.  This summer has been the same, just with more social distancing and video editing ;)
